New degree in textile construction

Allianz Arena, Munich, Germany.

The Hochschule Anhalt in Dessau, Germany, is setting up the world's first master's degree course in the use of textiles in building construction.

The programme, to begin in March 2006, is conceived for working professionals in the fields of architecture, civil engineering and surveying. Graduates in other fields can also be admitted on the basis of individual assessments. The course offers a limited number of places and leads to a Master of Engineering degree.

Over the last 40 years textile construction has evolved to become the fifth most significant building material in the world, after steel, glass, wood and concrete.

With works including the sporting facilities for the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, Frei Otto, the best-known modern pioneer of this type of construction, wrote the first chapter in modern membrane architecture. Among the increasing number of textile constructions in contemporary buildings, the new Munich football stadium (pictured) marks the current state of a spectacular development whose potential has only just begun to unfold.
